DISCO SUSPENSE & MURDER Part 3:
CHANTAL CURTIS - GET ANOTHER LOVER 1979 feat. The Sweethearts Of Sigma
By Soren Jensen:
After Tunesian-born, French-based Chantal Sitruk had been serving jail time for drug possession and seen her records become big disco hits for the models Michele and Brenda Mitchell, she finally had an album out in May 1979 which was credited to herself (with her last name changed to Curtis). Once again produced by Pierre Jaubert, the rhythm tracks were recorded in Paris and the backing vocals by the Sweethearts of Sigma in Philadelphia. The original French album pressing did not feature a photo of her but simply had a picture of a yellow cab as a hint to the song Hey Taxi Driver.
PYE Records in the UK had high hopes for the album and released it as a 2LP set (to ensure the best possible audio quality), the cover featuring a photo of Chantal sat in a bar. The shot on the back cover, however, had her in an unflattering pose, sadly looking as if she were completely stoned. Get Another Love became a big disco hit. In Blues & Soul the single was hailed as one of the best disco records of the year and "a brilliant piece of disco magic": "If you haven't heard this yet, you cannot have been to a club for the past six weeks [...] Unrelenting from start to finish, Ms Curtis alternatively moans and screams how she has to find a new man in her life." Chantal was even flown to London to perform a live version on Top Of The Pops on July 12, 1979. Despite the club success, the song only went up to #51 in the UK charts, proving that raving DJ reactions do not always guarantee a pop success. A second single Hit Man, released in October, did not chart. Due to copyright reasons I am sadly unable to include the fantastic original version here.
Chantal should probably have gotten herself another love in her private life as well. When visiting Jerusalem in 1985 with her boyfriend who had connections in the drug environment, she was hit by a bullet destined for him and died, only in her early 30s. This is a tribute to the brilliant disco trilogy she left behind, expanded with Patrick Cowley's bubbling remix of Body Party (released as Brenda Mitchell), an alternate version of the Brenda Mitchell track Get It Together (credited to Chantale Curtis on a soundtrack album), her 1978 single País Tropical as Julie Sitruk, and a B-side of a 1980 single (of which I don't have the A-side). The set is rounded off with a brilliant 2006 house version of Get Another Love, sung by Kathy Brown, showing just how fresh the song still sounds to this date.
